The other day, a friend contacts me via social media. I won't go over the details, because I do not wish to embarrass anyone. In short writing, the video was about the signs of the second coming. I could pick the video apart, but a lot of it was valuable information. However, some of the information in the video were things that I had not heard before nor could I verify the information with sources from the Church. However, I think the purpose of the video was to help us prepare for some of the things to come, and to prepare for the second coming of the savior. It put me on my own study.
I found four keys to help me, and can help all of us. In times like COVID-19 pandemic, it is good to understand how we can better prepare for times to come. It is also good that we do not forget the lessons, the spiritual lessons that we learn now as things get better and life begins to normalize again. These are four scriptures that I think are helpful for us.
Four Keys
1. Amos 3:7
"Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets."
The Lord isn't going to reveal anything to me, except what only applies to me and my family, that he does not also reveal to the prophet. If it has been revealed but the prophet has yet to share it, then trust that he will in due time.
There may be things that you or I uncover through scripture study that has not been shared with the church as a whole. If it is me that discovers it, it is for the benefit of myself and my family. Trust that such information will be made available to the entire church when the time is right.
2. Doctrine and Covenants 136:35
"And now cometh the day of their calamity, even the days of sorrow, like a woman that is taken in travail (about to deliver, as in have a baby); and their sorrow shall be great unless they speedily repent, year, very speedily."
We may not know the hour and the day that the savior will come again, but we can know by the signs that it is near. And yes, it is very near. This is like a woman who is about to deliver a baby. Even in the last days of her pregnancy, no one knows the day that she will deliver, but she can know by the signs when it is time to go to the delivery room.
I believe by the signs that we have all witnessed, that the end is near and it is time to prepare spiritually...and temporally as your circumstances permit. But there are things that have not yet happened...a topic for a later blog.
The time to repent is now, no matter how close the end is.
3. Doctrine and Covenants 38:30
"...But if ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
We will know from following the teaching of the prophet and through our own study and prayer how to prepare for the coming days. We will know what to stop doing, and what to start doing. This is according to some of the advice provided to us by the prophet. Preparation, mostly spiritual preparation is the key to overcoming fear.
4. Doctrine and Covenants 101:22
"Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places;"
While it is clear that not every believer will be spared from the events of the last days, if we repent and stand in holy places, at least it will be well with us. Part of that does not mean to stand still and do nothing, but to be engaged in good works at all times.
